Coastal Dune Lakes of South Walton County and Scenic 30A Corridor are some of the many fabulous natural wonders along the Beaches of 30A in South Walton County. Locals, wildlife, and the frequent visitors of the beaches truly appreciate their unsurpassed beauty and the many activities that the lakes provide: swimming, fishing, YOLO boarding, hiking, skiing, flounder gigging, frog gigging, and especially, the several days of the year when the lakes are furiously emptying into the Gulf of Mexico and the following days until the Gulf flows back across the beach and into the Lake.
Coastal Dune Lakes are a geographic rarity only found in Australia, The Northland of New Zealand, Madagascar, and the Florida Panhandle (Walton County, 30A Corridor). Coastal Dune Lakes are permanent bodies of fresh and brackish water that are separated by a larger body of salt water, either an ocean or a Gulf, by sand dunes and beach. Several times throughout the year, the lakes because of air pressure and too much water, will overflow the beaches and sand dunes to empty into the Gulf of Mexico like a whitewater river. Once the lakes have equalized with the Ocean or Gulf, the beaches will fill in and seal the break. Over time, the beaches will be opened again by the water levels of the of the larger salt water body (Gulf Of Mexico in the US), and the salt water will breach the beach and dune system, and flow their clear salt water back into the lake…
Probably the most well known and enjoyed lake of the 15 in Walton County, Florida is Western Lake. The southern most portion of Western Lake, where the breach occurs, is in Grayton Beach, and extends Northeast below 30A, and into the development of Watercolor, and Grayton Beach State Park. On the most eastern side of Western Lake, the water eventually flows into a canal passing the development of The Hammocks and Seagrove Beach.
Some of the most sought after homes and homesites throughout South Walton County are along the Coastal Dune Lakes due to their natural beauty and wildlife that call them home, and preservation of these natural resources are a responsibility to all that enjoy them.
